Naktuinbouw is organising two workshops from June 6 till June 9, 2012: a Variety Tracing workshop in cooperation with the ISTA Variety Committee and a workshop for purity, germination and viability in flower seed with the ISTA Flower Seed Committee.
Deadline for registration is March 30th, 2012.
ISTA Workshop on Flower Seed Testing
The aim of this workshop is to gain knowledge and some experience in flower seed testing. The content of the workshop is:
- Purity analysis
- Germination testing
- Tetrazolium testing
- Statistics in seed testing
- Excursion to flower auction and flower seed company

ISTA workshop on Variety Testing
This workshop gives an overview of the different methods that can be applied for Variety Testing. The main focus is on DNA based methods for variety ID and statistics. Hands-on experiments of PCR-based marker systems, fingerprint analysis and clustering.
Preliminary programme:
- Overview of conventional and protein ID methods
- Overview of sampling for Variety Testing and preparation of working samples
- Different methods for DNA extraction and quantification
- Polymerase Chain Reaction, optimalisation, primer design etc.
- Molecular markers for Variety ID – Different types of markers
- Data analysis in BioNumerics (different outputs of fingerprint data)
- Data mining/Database development
- Genetic similarity analyses and statistics (clustering, PCA, MDS)
- Statistical aspects of purity testing
- Molecular markers applications at Naktuinbouw
- Future (technological) developments for variety testing
